Although you can register any time during the year, your form must be delivered or mailed at least 25 days before the next election for it to be effective for that election.

How can I register?

  1. You can register in-person at your local County Board of Elections, any DMV office, or a number of other New York State agencies.
  2. Go to nycvotes.turbovote.org. If you have a state ID from the Department of Motor Vehicles (“DMV”) you will be able to register seamlessly through that system. If you do not have a DMV ID you can choose to receive a pre-filled form and a postage-paid, addressed envelope, or you can print the pre-filled form and mail it immediately. The registration will not be complete until this form is mailed to and processed by the Board of Elections.

Am I eligible to register to vote?

In order to register to vote you must:

  1. Be a United States citizen;
  2. be 18 years old (you may pre-register at 16 or 17 but cannot vote until you are 18);
  3. resident of this State and the county, city or village for at least 30 days before the election;
  4. not be in prison for a felony conviction;
  5. not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court;
  6. and not claim the right to vote elsewhere

What if I have moved since the last time I voted?

A law was passed, and took effect on March 25th of 2019, providing for registration portability within the entire State of New York. You may update your voter registration with your new address, but it is not essential. The most important thing to do is to identify the poll site associated with your current/new address, and cast your ballot at that site.

  1. If you have a DMV ID, update your information through the DMV’s website.
  2. If you don’t have a DMV ID, visit nycvotes.turbovote.org where you can print and mail a pre-filled form with your new information.
  3. Or, print, fill out, and mail a form to the Board of Elections.
  4. Confirm that your change of address was processed going to your poll site.

If a change of address was not processed (or never submitted), and you have moved within New York State, you may cast an affidavit ballot at your assigned poll site for your new address. When casting an affidavit ballot because of an address change, the affidavit ballot will be used to update your voter registration for future elections.

First-Time Voters

The “Help America Vote Act” (HAVA) which was enacted into law in 2002, requires all first time voters, who registered by mail on or after January 1, 2003, to provide additional identification either on or with the voter registration application, i.e., the driver’s license number or the last four digits of your social security number.
If you do not have a driver’s license or social security number, you may use a valid photo ID, a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check or some other government document that shows your name and address.

You may include a copy of one of those types of ID when you mail the Registration Form. If the Board of Elections is unable to verify your identity before Election Day, you will be asked for an ID when you vote for the first time.
